Denon AVR-5805

The price tag of the new Denon AVR-5805 Home theater receiver shocked me , and wondered if the company had finally gone crazy. However, I had to revise my views when I actually got to look at the product and test it. I found that it offers numerous possibilities. All your home theater requirements are met in this one box solution.

With this model, it is possible to distribute independent multi channel audio into two unique zones as well as distributing audio to as many as 22 channels all over the house. This is quite amazing! In addition to all the usual functions, there is an Audyssey room correction system and support for the latest audio and video modes.

This single box product is unique in that it offers excellent performance that is superior to other models which require many boxes. AVR-5805 is a technological marvel. It has the latest version of 32 bit DSP clipsets from Texas Instruments (main zone) and a 32 bit analog SHARC that is like the AVR-2805 for Zone2.

 

It has the latest Burr Brown DACs and ADCs which alone cost more than per chip used in the multi-channel DAC solutions of expensive models of home theater receivers with separate components. This new Denon model offers in addition to all the above, Silicon Image HD M I tranceivers, General I/P scaling and video processing.

Power amps use strong power transistors in push pull configuration which compare very well with many of the dedicated multi-channel power amps that are price at $ 2,000 – 3,000. Numerous heat sinks are distributed at the front and sides of the chassis to keep the system form heating up.

There are also two fans inside that are briefly turned on under extreme conditions to forcibly cool down the system. These fans draw the heated air away from transistors, chips, electrolytic capacitors and similar critical components. There are more than 10,000 components in this model.

This is three times more than what used in the earlier model, AVR-5803. AVR-5805 is highly regarded by engineers, and service technicians are awed by it. The lay out is along the superior pattern of the Denver 5800 series.

The power supplies are in the exact center, and similar to AVR-2805 there are two additional E-core transformers located at the back. These provide extra power capacity for 10 internal 170 wpc amplifiers. You will be amazed to learn that this model has twice the power supply capacitance than its predecessor, AVR-5803.

In this respect AVR 5805 is a class apart from all other receivers of high repute. Irrespective of whether you are using only a few channels or are using many, AVR-5805 is capable of utilizing all the power from a 15A wall outlet. It is therefore very important that you have a dedicated line just to serve this humongous machine.
